Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Junior created waves of change that have shaped the world and made them infamous. Both men became figure heads in their time and provided a vision for the world. Martin Luther King Jr is the most famous black American in our history and until recently there has been no black man who has come close to his accomplishments. Barrack Obama, however, shares some similarities to King. The most obvious of these is that both men grew up poor and black. Both men share dreams of making the world fairer for all regardless of race or religion. In addition, both men believed that their current wars should end and that peace should be pursued. Is this enough, however, to link both men? Does the fact that Obama ran and won the Presidency compare to the moral accomplishments of Dr. King? History will be the ultimate judge of this but I would like to take a closer look at their similarities.
These men’s past in no way parallel each other except in the hardships they faced as children. Both men devoted there lives to trying to help people and make the world a better place. Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister and devoted his entire life for the betterment of humanity. Obama has also dedicated his life to society by his commitment to politics. Both men also have the great gift of rhetoric. They both look to lift up the poor and the oppressed through their powerful words and their delivery. They both try to further race relations between not just blacks and whites but with all people everywhere. MLK and Obama share a belief that in order to achieve peace, all men and women regardless of race and religion, should be treated equally.
Martin Luther King Jr. advocated strongly that the war in Vietnam should end immediately. Similarly, Obama shares the same belief regarding the war in Iraq. They’re reasons differ but they’re linked forever in their belief that war should be avoided and peaceful resolutions should be sought. MLK believes that nonviolence is always the right answer and that America is being
arrogant. Obama and MLK both agree that war is bad because of the financial draw from the nation. MLK sees that the government spends far more on killing people in other countries then taking care of the sick and the poor. Obama understands that the 1 trillion dollars that have already been spent on the war will have a negative effect the next generations. Obama feels the world’s view of the United States is directly affected by our world position of dominance and control in areas other than our own. Both men see how it hurts the young men and women that fight the war.
One of the most striking resemblances are that both men gave moving and thought provoking speeches. These men’s rhetoric is so powerful that they inspire moved and sparked a nation into action. They would draw crowds of tens of thousands of people to here them speech and there words would often evoke strong emotions or tears. MLK won the Nobel peace prize for his work with civil rights. Kings movement and ideals had an effect on the president they were so huge. Obama was just elected to be president of the united states and had one of the largest inaugural address crowds in a long time. He is the first African American to be president. MLK helped shape the history of this great nation and many think that in the next few year Obama will do the same.
History will be the judge of whether Obama ends up mirroring the life of Martin Luther King Jr. At this point, the similarities are superficial. Both men are brilliant orators that have a unique gift to inspire and motivate. MLK Jr. was able to back up his speeches with moral character and a willingness to motivate change. Barack Obama, on the other hand, has been a life long politician with dreams and goals that have yet to be realized. It is clear, that Obama admires the ideals of MLK Jr. and in order for the comparison to be complete, his accomplishments and a life of selflessness will have to be lived
